Guide: How to Install a Steering Wheel in a 2016 or Newer ND MX-5

This guide is tailored for replacing the steering wheel of a 2016 or newer ND MX-5 Miata with an aftermarket option, specifically using the sleek KenStyle Steering Wheel.

  1. Start by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery, then press the brake pedal until the rear lights go out, indicating the vehicle is completely powered down.
  2. Before you begin to remove the steering wheel, take out the SRS Airbag and Horn fuse.
  3. In the three service holes, locate and remove the airbag lock, which is about 1 to 2 cm inside the hole.
  4. After unlocking the airbag, proceed with caution as it will slightly eject from the steering wheel.
  5. Pull back the airbag to access and disconnect the horn and airbag connectors.
  6. Remove the steering wheel, which is secured with a 21mm nut. A steering wheel puller tool is recommended for easier removal.
  7. Transfer components like the audio controls, cruise control, plastic trim, and airbag brackets and harnesses from the original steering wheel to the aftermarket one.
  8. Reassemble by reversing the steps from 6 to 2.

Prior to beginning the removal of the steering wheel, first extract the SRS Airbag and Horn fuse:

Inspect the three service holes to find and extract the airbag lock, which is typically situated about 1 to 2 cm inside the hole:

Once the airbag lock is released, exercise caution as the airbag may slightly dislodge from the wheel:

Following the retraction of the airbag, proceed to deactivate the switch and disconnect the connectors for both the horn and the airbag:

Transfer the audio controls, cruise control (not depicted in this image), plastic components, and airbag brackets and harnesses from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) steering wheel to the aftermarket one as needed:

Finalize the installation by reversing the process, following steps 2 through 6 in the opposite order:
